Create and Achieve your Vision, part 1: The What

I wasn’t born a full-time award-winning musician. In fact, I spent the first couple of decades of my adult life working in a completely different field. During those years, music was a hobby, a fulfilling one that I loved, but nothing more than that. Whilst I did catch the attention of a record label or two, it never came to anything.

At 42, I attended a concert by a friend. Seeing him shining on stage, being aware of his achievements and career, made me realise that I wanted that too. With my children in secondary and primary school, I was at a point when I finally had time for myself. The conditions were there, I could give professional music a shot! I hesitated for a long time, but finally, I decided to try.

I gave myself a timeframe, which was of five years, and sat to write down all the things I wanted to achieve during that period. At that point, I didn't know how to get there, but that didn't matter. The first step towards reaching a goal is to know what the goal is. Then, in 2012, I did a course in business planning that I used to structure my path in music as I had envisioned it. Activating that plan vastly accelerated my growth. Thanks to that and my conscious, constant work, here I am, many years beyond my original timeframe, successfully making and teaching music, and helping others to grow and achieve their own music dreams.

The what is just the beginning. You still need to figure out the why, the how, the when and the with whom. To help you out with this, I am making this post the first of a series. Stay tuned every week for a new article that will walk you through the process of consolidating and achieving your vision!

So you can follow along and get the best out of it, use these days to write down your own list of dreams. Some examples could be: "being a full-time gigging musician", "get a number 1 in the charts", "win this or that award", "become a member of this group/band/orchestra", "perform at this grand stage". Dream big, and don't be afraid or embarrassed about telling people (and yourself!) what your dreams are. Only by knowing where you are headed can you find the way and the support you'll need to get there! Also, progress needs time, so be sure to project this to at minimum one year, hopefully three or five.

Until next week!
